Abstract The microstructure of nodular cast iron after surface laser melted hasbeen examined by optical microscopy, SEM and scanning Auger microprobe. It wasshown that around the nodular graphite, a double-layer structure is composed ofmartensite+retained austenite together with pseudo-ledeburite at the interface ofmelted pool/matrix. The mechanism of structure formation has also been proposed.
