Abstract  The microstructure of the laser melted and resolidified layer on highspeed tool steel W_(18)Cr_4V observed is of very fine dendrites. The δ-ferrite remainsin the centre of part of the dendrites. The interior of dendrite is the twinned mar-tensite and a few dislocation martensite. M_(23)C_6 carbide along twin plane on twinnedmartensite may coherently precipitate as thin plate. The austenite enriched with al-loying elements as W, V and Cr, and M_6C carbide are found among the dendritearms.
