Abstract The effects of particle type and size of SiC, Al2O3 or SiO2 particle reinforced A1-4%Mg composites on the pushing behaviour during solidification were investigated. The intensity of pushing during solidification was determined by the mass ratio of equiaxed cell to particle. The theoretical predictions were in fair accordance with experimental results.
