Abstract  To explore a suitable flux for growth of β-BaB_2O_4 single crystal, thephase diagram of BaB_2O_4-BaF_2 binary system has been determined by means of DTAand X-ray diffraction. The coupled thermodynamical parameters of the binary systemhave been also calculated by optimum analysis. The calculated phase diagram is ingood agreement with the experimental one. A congruent compound, BaBO_2F, withM. P. 867℃ and the eutectic reactions L?β-BaB_2O_4+BaBO_2F and L?BaBO_2F+BaF_2with eutectic temperatures of 749.1 and 815.4℃ respectively were found. It may bebelieved that the BaBO_2F is a potentially favourable flux.
