Abstract  In shot peened α-brass surface layer {111} type planar defects anddeformation microtwins have been observed by means of TEM analysis. Thedensity of microtwins decreases with the increase of layer depth. The enhancementof fatigue strength and the unrelaxation of residual stress after shot peening areconcerned in the substructures of strengthened layer.
