Abstract The possibility of manufacture of titanium nitride by microwave carbothermal reduction of titanium oxide was discussed. The mechanism and thermal dynamics of the reaction process was also studied. The resuls showed that the technology has unique advantages compared with the conventional carbothermal reduction method, for example it can not only lower the reaction temperature, shorten the synthesis cycle, but also can refine the powder particles, so the reactivity of the powder is improved.
