Abstract In order to explain many of the phenomena observed in microindentation test.for example, the substrate effect on the microhardness measurements of coating-substrate systems, the determining of the critical load and the apparent microhardness increase with decreasing load etc, the finite element method is applied to simulate the microindentation process on bulk materials and coating-substrate systems.
