Abstract Discussion with experiments was carried out on the model for the effect of residual stress upon crack growth. A rather accurate calculation of crack growth rate in a compressive residual stress field may be made by the equation:The compressive residual stress not only increases the crack closure force but also decreases the maximum stress intensity factor.Both reduce the ΔK_(eff) value and the crack growth driving force, thus the crack growth rate is decreased.HU Naisai, professor,(National Laboratory for Mechanical Behaviour of Metallic Materials,Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710049)
