The viscosity and conductivity of a tin-rich, ferruginous slag at 1100—1350℃ weredetermined under a mixture of CO and CO_2. Conforming with Frenkel's theory, theseproperties vary exponentially with the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. The ac-tiviation energy of viscosity and conductivity depend upon the composition of the atmos-phere, and they increase rapidly as the content of CO decreases in the CO-CO_2 mixture.A tentative explanation of this has been put forward.

The vapor pressures of Sb in pure liquid Sb and liquid Ga-Sb alloys have beenmeasured by a transpiration method at 720, 750 and 780℃. From these vapor pres-sure data and the Ga-Sb phase diagram, a P-T diagram for the Ga-Sb system has beenconstructed.

The application of the sub-regular solution model to the thermodynamical analysisof binary equilibrium diagrams has been discussed. A number of criterion-relations ofsub-regularity have been derived for different typical equilibrium cases. Calculationsshow that the solutions formed by the Ⅲ_B, Ⅳ_B, Ⅴ_B elements with Ge can be describedapproximately by the sub-regular solution model; the Ga-As melts in the region close tostoichiometry are nearly regular whereas the In-Sb melts are shown to be sub-regular. The constants of sub-regularity obtained can be used to calculate the thermodynamicquantities of the corresponding solutions.

On the basis of the relations derived in our previous paper on the application of thesub-regular solution model to the thermodynamic analysis of binary phase diagrams, thethermodynamic properties of In-Sb system are discussed. Using the constants of sub-regularity obtained, the standard free energy of formation of In-Sb and the liquidus inequilibrium with the congruent compound have been calculated. The results are in goodagreement with the experimental data. Various thermodynamic properties of the In-Sbmelts have been calculated and compared with the data of Terpilowski.

INTERNAL ADSORPTION OF ZIRCONIUM IN MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS AND ITS EFFECT ON RECRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE STRENGTH

Abstract

The internal adsorption of zirconium in molybdenum alloys containing titanium andits effect on the recrystallization temperture and high temperature strength were studied. It is shown that in Mo-0.5% Ti alloys, zirconium has a strong tendency to segregate at thegrain boundaries of molybdenum, and as a result, the recrystallization temperature, hothardness and compressive creep strength of the alloys are markedly increased. Thefunction of zirconium in raising the recrystallization temperature and high temperaturestrength is discussed. And it is believed that the internal adsorption of zirconium mayaccount for its beneficial strengthening effects in molybdenum alloys.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF CYANIDED 18CrMnTi and 18CrMnMo STEELS

Abstract

The C-curves of the cyanided case of 18CrMnTi and 18CrMnMo steels austeni-tized at 860℃ were determined by metallographic methods. In order to investigate theinfluence of nitrogen on the transformation characteristics, carburized samples with prac-tically the same carbon content as the cyanided ones were also prepared and examined. The results show that the cyanided samples have lower A_1 temperatures, considerablyhigher M_s points and shorter incubation periods in both the pearlitic and bainitic regionsthan the carburized samples. It is found that before the pearlitic and upper-bainitic reactions, a pro-cutectoid orpro-bainitic phase is precipitated along the austenite grain boundaries in the cyanidedsamples; and it is thought that this is likely a nitrogen-bearing phase which provides thephase boundary effect for the nucleation of the reactions and impoverishes the parentaustenite in alloy content, thus accelerating the transformation of austenite.

ON THE BEHAVIOR OF HIGH TEMPERATURE CREEP OF A Mg-1.5% Th-0.8% Mn ALLOY

Abstract

The creep behavior of a Mg-Th-Mn alloy at 350℃ under a constant load cor-responding to an initial stress of 3.0 kg/mm~2 has been investigated. The shape of thecreep curve of cold-worked specimens differs from that of annealed ones in that the steadycreep stage is almost absent in the latter though it is remarkable in the former. Forthe annealed specimens slip has been observed in the first stage of creep, and poly-gonization and grain boundary gliding have been shown to occur in the third stage. Thatthese processes take place simultaneously and also react with each other may be the reasonfor the absence of the steady stage of creep in annealed specimens. It is assumed thatcold-working strengthens the grains, thus slowing down the rate of grain boundary gliding. The intercrystalline fracture of this alloy is mainly due to the stress concentrationaccording to Zener's mechanism.

THE TEXTURE AND MAGNETOSTRICTION OF NICKEL

Abstract

An investigation on the rolling and recrystallization textures of nickel has beencarried out. After different reductions, the transformation of the rolling texture and themagnetostriction of the cube-textured material are studied. The change of length of thecube-textured specimens in a magnetic field is similar to that of a single crystal in [100]direction; as the percentage of reduction increases, the magnetostriction is more difficultto reach saturation.

ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHROMIUM IN THE CHROMIUMDEPLETED ZONE OF A SENSITIZED 18-8 STAINLESS STEELS

Abstract

The distribution of chromium in the chromium-depleted zone of a sensitized (650℃,2 hrs.) 18-8 stainless steel was studied by our coulometric method. A sheet of stainlesssteel was held at a potential at which the chromium-depleted zone is active whereas theregions with higher chromium contents remain passive. Since the different parts of thedepleted zone contain different amounts of chromium and thus have different passivatingproperties, they can be "extracted" fractionally at different potentials and allow theirwidths and compositions to be determined separately. Using this method, it is shown that the chromium-depleted zone consists of layersof continuously varying chromium contents and passivating properties. The total widthof the depleted zone is about 2000A, but that containing less than 8.7% Cr is only128A (on each side of Cr_(23)C_6) and that containing less than 16.1% Cr is only 384A,etc. Thus, the distribution diagram of chromium in the depleted zone is for the firsttime quantitatively obtained (Fig. 2).

ON THE INTERGRANULAR CORROSION OF 18-8 STAINLESS STEEL AT DIFFERENT POTENTIALS

Acta Metall Sin, 1965,

Abstract

The intergranular corrosion of annealed and sensitized 18—8 stainless steels at dif-ferent potentials were studied potentiostatically in 5% and 50% sulfuric acid. It is con-cluded that in the passivating region, the main cause of intergranular corrosion is theselective dissolution of the chromium-depleted zone. In the transpassive region, however,it was found that the sensitized steel does not corrode intergranularly whereas the an-nealed steel suffers rather severe intercrystalline attack. Moreover, titanium-stabilizedstainless steel in the annealed state also shows definite intergranular corrosion in thistrans-passive region while the same steel tempered at 700℃ suffers much less. Thus itis suggested that the intergranular attack occured here is not due to the Cr-depleted zone, but due to the less regular arrangement of the atoms or the stress at the boundaries-both can be reduced by tempering. In the secondary passive region and the secondary trans-passive region, the annealedsteel ceases to suffer while the sensitized steel shows severe intergranular attack again. It is suggested that the intergranular attack here occurs as a result of selective dissolutionof the chromium carbides at the grain boundaries. In the passive region, both steels suffer no intergranular attack. From these results it is concluded that the degree of susceptibility, the cause of inter-granular corrosion and the relative susceptibility of different steels all depend on electrodepotentials. Thus, the potentiostatic method might be used as a convenient method forpreventing, detecting and studying intergranular corrosion.
