Abstract  The C-curves of the cyanided case of 18CrMnTi and 18CrMnMo steels austeni-tized at 860℃ were determined by metallographic methods. In order to investigate theinfluence of nitrogen on the transformation characteristics, carburized samples with prac-tically the same carbon content as the cyanided ones were also prepared and examined. The results show that the cyanided samples have lower A_1 temperatures, considerablyhigher M_s points and shorter incubation periods in both the pearlitic and bainitic regionsthan the carburized samples. It is found that before the pearlitic and upper-bainitic reactions, a pro-cutectoid orpro-bainitic phase is precipitated along the austenite grain boundaries in the cyanidedsamples; and it is thought that this is likely a nitrogen-bearing phase which provides thephase boundary effect for the nucleation of the reactions and impoverishes the parentaustenite in alloy content, thus accelerating the transformation of austenite.
