Abstract The morphology and distribution of carbides in a directionally solidified cobalt-base superalloy have been studied. When the silidification rate,ν, was 7 mm/min the alloy contatined a maximum content of carbides. The carbide content increases as the increasing in ν up to 7 mm/min, and then, it decreases with the increase in νover 7mm/min, and the size of carbides reduces sharply. Both content and size of carbides increase nomotonously with the distance apart from the chilled plate.
