Abstract A modified ion-plated IP-TiN coating has been developed by adding6 wt-% elementary Al and various small amounts of La. Examination of this coat-ing shows that the adhesion between the coating and substrate may be remarkablyimproved by the La added up to 2 wt-%, and the microhardness and wear resistanceof the coating surface may regularly change with the increase of La content. EPMAand X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the Al and La added are concentratedat the interface of the coating/substrate where a thicker transition zone formedwith an alternation of phase composition and grain orientation of the coating. Thus, an improvement over the properties of coating was proposed.
