Abstract The yield strengths of shot peened and unpeened surfaces of a quenched and low temperature tempered steel 60Mn have been detected by using the X-ray stress analyses and strain gauge methods. The results show that shot peening raised the surface yield stresses although it apparently decreases the half width value of X-ray diffraction profile. This discovery proves that the shot peened surface has been work hardened, rather than work softened. On the other hand, it implies that half width value could not correctly characterize the superficial mechanical features for some material states.
