Abstract The effect of austenitizing temperature on segregation of impurities alonggrain boundaries in 4330M steel has been examined by AES. The impurities segregation wascomputed quantitatively. Sulphur is revealed to segregate along austenite grain boundarieswhen steel quenched at 870 or 1000℃. No segregation will occur at quenching temperatureup to 1100 or 1200℃. However, the segregation becomes quite serious under stepped quenchingfrom 1200 to 870℃. The limitation of the Maclean expression for equilibrium segregation wasdiscussed.
