Abstract The electrode processes of Tm3+ in molten chlorides were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, open circuit potential-time curve after potentiostatic electrolysis and X-ray diffraction. Tm3+ is reduced to Tm2+ at first and then the metallic Tm is deposited on the W and Mo electrode respectively. The Tm-Ni alloys are formed at first and then the metallic Tm is deposited on Ni electrode. The diffusion coefficient and diffusion activation energy of Tm3+ in molten chlorides were determined. InD=-4.35-58.2x10~3 /RT is obtained.
