Abstract The γ-irradiation-hydrothermal treatment method has been successfully used to prepare pure nanocrystalline powders of Ag(8 nm),Cu (16 nm) and Pd (10 nm). Influences of experimental conditions on Ag particle size are discussed. The complexation of cupric ion with EDTA is favourable for the preparation of nanocrystalline Cu powder. By controlling the conditions of the experiments, different shapes of Cu particles can be obtained. The process of the formation of metal particles in the solution during γ-irradiation is also discussed.
