Abstract A new method for synthesizing ultrafine metal oxide powders was presented in combination with solvent extraction. The extraction system used for Zr in HCl solution was selected based on industrial practice with tri-n-butyl phosphate(TBP) as extractant and kerosene as diluent. Conditions used to obtain reversed micellar solution were experimentally determined, i.e. high aqueous acidity and relatively high metal ion concentration. The micellar solution was then used to react with aqueous ammonia to produce precipitate followed by washing, drying and calcining of the precipitate, monodispersed ZrO_2 powders with an average diameter of 10 nm were obtained.
