Abstract  A TEM investigation was made of the morphology, orientation rela-tionship and habit plane of three kinds of alloy nitrides, namely CrN, VN andMo_2N, formed simultaneously in the diffusional nitrided layer of a 4Cr5MoV1Si(H13) steel nitrided at 580℃. It was found that the nitrides were precipitated bycontinuous clustering and subsequent ordering of both interstitial (N) and substitu-tional (Cr, V, Mo) solutes on {001} habit plane. The observed morphology andcrystallography of the nitrides are in good agreement with the predictions from theinvariant line strain model proposed for precipitation transformations.
