Abstract Creep fractured surface of SiC_p-Al composite was quantitatively analyzed by employing image processing technique and solid mechanics principles, and the effective creep strain was determined. It was found that there is exponential relationship between cavity volume fraction and effective creep strain in the vicinity of fracture surface, which elucidates that the cavity growth during tertiary creep stage was controlled by plastic deformation. The presented testing principle and method could be applied to other plastically deformed materials containing cavities.
