Abstract Regular porous metal with a radial pore distribution is produced by precipitation of supersaturated gas when the melt is bidirectionally solidified. A model was proposed to describe the ideal pore distribution of radial-type regular porous structure and rationality of the model was proved. This model can describe the effects of pore nucleation, pore coalition and pore interruption on structural characteristics and their quantitative relation can be deduced from the model. Probability of pore nucleation, pore coalition and pore interruption in the samples was also calculated.
