Abstract The crack tip stress-strain fields of the elastic-plastic cracked speci-mens have been analyzed using finite element calculations, the crack initiation andsteady propagation behaviours have also been investigated by means of slip linepattern etching technique and mechanical tests. The results showed that there areHRR near field and distant field in the crack tip region, the latter depends on thespecimen configuration. The crack initiation behaviour is controlled by the singleparameter J, in contrast, the crack steady propagation is affected by the distantstrain field and can not be described by single parameter only.
