Abstract ABSTRACT In this paper, the method using Solid Oxygen-Ion Membrane (SOM) to produce tantalum from tantalum oxide was investigated. Experiment was carried out at 1150℃ and 3.2V of DC electrolysis potential in the flux system of 55.5wt.%CaF2- 44.5wt.%MgF2. Sintered Ta2O5 solid and liquid copper saturated with carbon loaded in zirconia tube were used as the cathode and the anode, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) indicated that the amount of oxygen in tantalum oxide decreased obviously even approached to the zero level and tantalum was produced.
