Abstract  Using gauge field theory of defects, the effective critical extensionforce in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics was given. The rationality of logarithmof effective critical extension force as a linear function of the fractal dimensionali-ty of the fracture was analyzed in theory. The explanation in approach to studyingmaterial toughness using the fractal has been clarified.
