Abstract:Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) has been applied to investigate the kinetics of pitting propagation for 321 stainless steel in 0.5 mol/ L NaCl media. The results indicate the occurrence of the active corrosion of metals in the pitting holes. Fe, Ni and Mn, in form of divalence, and Cr in form of trivalvence dissolve into solution. On the basis of AAS data, the influence of the amounts Fe2+ and Cr3+ dissolved in corrosion pits upon the autocatalytic processes is discussed.
