Abstract:The microstructure, especially M-A structure of the welds with 50—100kgf/mm~2 strength has been examined by optical and electron microscopy as well as selected area electron diffraction. It was observed that M-A structure practically consists of carbon-rich austenite or martensite or both of them. They appear particle or lath in morphology depending upon the contents of alloy elements. They distribute primarily at or near the grain boundaries and sometimes within the grains. The structure of weld metal varies from proeutectoid ferrite acicular ferrite and pearlite to granular bainite and finally to lath bainite and martensite, while the alloy content (also strength) increasing.
