Abstract The properties of gas carbonitriding layer on 18CrMnNiMoA steel relatingto its morphology,structure,composition,distribution and partition of alloyingelements among the phases contained have been studied by means of electrolyticextraction-chemical separation-X-ray diffraction phase analysis layer by layer,aswell as by TEM or electron diffraction observation and by chemical analysis.Thestrengthening mechanism of the carbonitriding layer has also been discussed.
