Abstract TEM and SEM studies were carried out on the low carbon martensitic steel 12Ni4CrMo undergone intercritical heat treatment. The influence of the quenching temperature between A_(c_1)—A_(c_3) on the morphology, phase constitution as well as -196℃ CVN toughness were analyzed in comparison with the steel conventionally treated. It is suggested that the effective grain refinement, the configuration of zigzag prior austenite grain boundary and the suitable substructure are the important microstructural characteristics of the intercritically treated steel. These seem to be the main factors contributing to the optimum toughness.
