Abstract  The phase equilibrium relationship of the Ni-Fe-16.7 at.-%La system has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and DTA. The Ni-riched region has a peritectic reaction. A new hexagonal intermetallic compound LaNi_3Fe_2is identified. The absorption and desorption of hydrogen by the system and by this new compound were also examined.
