Abstract  Study was carried out on the nature and origin of the flat spots in flash- welded seams of the rails by the technique of failure analysis. It was detected that the flat spots are originated from the coalescence of silicate inclusions which are formed in the process of flash-welding and are closely related to the welding technical specification.
