Abstract In view of interaction of hydrogen with point and line defects in initial stage of the plastic deformation, the influence of hydrogen charging on yielding behaviour of Armco-and Vacofer-Fe has been investigated. Various models on hydrogen embrittlement have been discussed. It is considered that the change of mechanical properties induced by hydrogen may be attributed to that hydrogen promotes the thermal activation, increases the movable ability of intestitial atoms and reduces the resistance of dislocation movement. The experimental show that these effects are directly related to the state and distribution of hydrogen atoms in the vicinity of the dislocation.
