Abstract The possibility of CD carburizing and effect of C potential on the microstructure in surface layer of commercial medium-C alloy steel have been studied by thermodynamic analysis and experiments. A method used to calculated the C potential resulting in expected carburized microstructure has been proposed, which was supported by the experimental data. The structure of CD carburized layer for steel 4Cr5MoVSi provides a new possibility to improve the surface hardness and wear resistance of the steel.
