Abstract The reaction product of Ca_2SiO_4-NaFeO_2 system has been investigated byX-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The product contains CaFe_2O_4 and Na_4Ca_8(SiO_4)_5.Thermodynamical estimation also confirms that Ca_2SiO_4+NaFeO_2 is not the stable pair ofthe reciprocal salt pairs of Ca, NaSiO_4, FeO_2 system. In the reactions betweenNa_4Ca_8(SiO_4)_5 and sodium aluminate solution there forms Ca_3[Al(OH)_6]_2 (or its solid solu-tion) which will decrease the recovery of alumina. Based on the abovementioned facts, themathematical model for the optimization of the composition of sinters in alumina productionhas been explained.
