Abstract  Experiments were carried out on a rotary contact fatigue testing machine with two roller specimens made of the commercial 18Cr2Ni4WA steel bearing different amounts of retained austenite under various regimes of heat treatment. Results show that the specimen with more retained austenite is superior in con- tact fatigue resistance to that with less one.It is believed to be significant for improving the contact fatigue resistance by the formation of micro-duplex structure during testing because of the existence of the super fine granule in austenite matrix. In addition,thedeformation-induced martensitic transformation and beneficial distribution of the residual stresses may also contribute to the contact fatigue resistance to certain extent.
