Abstract A criterion of the cell-dendrite transition in the unidirectional solidification rate, R, of single phase binary alloys was proposed as R>2D_L/λ, where D_L is diffusion coefficient in liquid and λ is distance between principal branches of cells and dendrites. The experimental verification was made of the Al-Cu alloy by the authers and of the previous data collected.
