Abstract The valence electron structure of the Fe-Cr σ-phase was analyzed by themethod of the bond distances based on the empirical electron theory of solidsor molecules.The covalent bond electrons are shown to be remarkably distributedirregularly.This seems to be one of the possible reason why the Fe-Cr σ-phaseembrittles.
