Abstract The internal friction in an 18-8-3-1 Cr-Ni--Mo-Ti heat-resisting steel was measuredwith a torsion pendulum, and an internal friction peak around 520℃ was observed. Theheight of the peak was found to increase with the content of δ-ferrite in the specimens.The peak disappeared after the δ-ferrite all decomposed. This indicates that, this peakis associated with the presence of δ-ferrite in the specimen. The activation energy asso-ciated with this peak was measured to be 95,000 (±5,000) calories per mole by themethod of changing frequency. It is suggested that the internal friction peak is a bulkeffect of δ-ferrite in the specimen, and it may be induced by some diffusion process inδ-ferrite.
