Abstract  It is still a controversy that where oxygen comes from for the rimming action during solidi-fation of the rimmed steel ingot. This investigation was carried out in order to see the oxidizingaction of different atmospheres such as oxygen, nitrogen, water gas and air. Experimentswere also conducted on large rimmed steel ingots to control the rimming action by control ofadmission of air to the mold during solidification. Analyses of steel bath, segregation and dis-tribution of impurities in the ingot were made. It is concluded that secondary oxidation duringteeming and rimming is the main source of oxygen. Segregation of steel ingot may be reducedby the control of rimming action with the aid of regulation of air admission to the rimmingbath in the mold.
