Abstract The corrosion behaviors of pure iron and two commercial steels were examined in presence of
ZnCl2--KCl deposits in controlled atmosphere containing HCl at 500℃. All of three materials suffered accelerated corrosion by forming thick oxide scales, and complex chlorides mixed molten salts appeared between the oxide scales and substrate materials. However, materials with higher Cr
content have better corrosion resistance due
to the formation of Fe--Cr spinel or chromia in the inner part of oxide scales. The mechanism for the corrosion accelerated by molten chlorides deposits is discussed.
