Abstract The hot shortness mechanism in the temperature range 1050—1250℃ of mild steels, containing 0.1—0.4% Cu, 0.1—0.4% As, 0.01—0.03% Sn, has been investigated by means of hot bend tests, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe. The deleterious effects due to surface enrichment of As and Cu and the oxidation at austenite grain boundaries appear to be the main cause of hot shortness of the material.
