Abstract  The fracture surfaces of certain fracture toughness specimens have been ex-amined by SEM. With materials fractured in quasi-cleavage mechanism, the meandistance, ξ, from the pre-crack tip to the site where the quasi-cleavage crackstarts is regarded to be a characteristic parameter. It seems that this related toG_(Ic) and can be used as an important parameter characterizing the stress field ofthe plastic zone.
