Abstract Studies on the kinetics of copper dissolution in aqueous ammoniacal solutionsaturated with oxygen-nitrogen mixtures of different composition under ambientpressure have been carried out. The reaction of copper dissolution is electrochemi-cal in nature. When the rate of dissolution is limited by the cathodic reaction,the transfer of oxygen is a controlling factor. On the contrary, when the processis limited by the anodic reaction, the reaction will be controlled by the rate ofammonium ion diffusion as well as by the chemical reaction rate with ammo-nia. Criteria for the rate of dissolution of copper will rise or fall with timehave been found. Conditions for the autocatalytic reaction to take place havealso been investigated.
