Abstract An investigation of self-powdering of RE-Si-Fe alloy was conducted by means of X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. It is identified that the presence of REP, or CeC_2, La_2C_3 may be the cause of self-powdering when it exposed to weather or soaked in water. Its self-powdering behaviour is aggravated by both hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion.
