Abstract The solidification of the Sn-Bi binary alloy has been monitored by sensitive acoustic emission equipment. It is found that the characteristic acoustic emission is dependent on the material nature, the alloy composition and the solidification process. The acoustic emission technique is applicable to determine the phase diagram of the Sn-Bi binary system and to monitor the solidification processing. Thus, it seems that this technique may be available means to theoretically and technologically study the dynamical micro-mechanism of the solidification of metal and alloy as well as of the casting process.
