Abstract Lattice distortion has been deemed as one of the most distinctive structural features of high-entropy alloys. However, despite its fundamental importance, the notion of lattice distortion and its characterization is still an issue under debate. In this work, based on the recent work on theoretical modeling, atomistic simulations and experiments, the physical origin of lattice distortion in high-entropy alloys and its resultant intrinsic residual stresses or strains are discussed.
