For the investigation of a series of problems in connection with the behaviour of fluorine inblast-furnace smelting,an experimental blast-furnace of an effective volume of about 1 m~3 wasbuilt at our Institute by November 1955 together with the necessary auxiliary equipment.Pao-Tou iron ore,which contains fluorite as one of its chief gangues,was smelted in our experimentalblast-furnace with and without previous sintering,and the planned experiments were completed intwo campaigns which lasted for 22 and 36 days respectively.The smelting characteristics ofour experimental blast-furnace are herewith reported together with data on material balance of allthe constituents including fluorine.It was found that nearly all the fluorine went into the slag,while the fluorine content of tht blast-furnace gas was exceedingly low despite the rather highpercentage of fluorite in the charge.

The microstructure and the magnetic properties of cold reduced and annealed armco iron arestudied.The textures of the samples used in the experiments have been determined by the X-raypole figure and the magnetic torque methods as reported in the two earlier papers.The samples having higher magnetic permeabilities show a secondary recrystallization.Therelations between recrystallization and magnetic properties are briefly discussed.

A critical survey is made of the thermodynamic data available for deoxidation of steel.TheFe-O and Fe-C-O systems are considered first,followed by equilibria involving such deoxidationelements as Al,Si,Mn,Cr,V,Ti,B etc..The deoxidation power of the various elements iscompared in a conventional log[% O]-log[% E]diagram for 1600℃.The nature of deoxi-dation products and the interaction between oxygen and alloying elements in liquid iron are alsodiscussed in the light of some new published data.
