THE MECHANISM OF HANGING IN THE BLAST FURNACE

The modified Janssen formula, relating the pressure of the burden column and thecountercurrent gas flow, has been verified experimentally. However this formula can notexplain the mechanism of hanging. The authors proposed the following mechanism: Ifthere exists a layer of poor gas-permeability in the burden column and if the gas velocityis increased to exceed some critical value, then the pressure drop of the gas through thatlayer would become greater than the layer weight. Therefore a force acting upward fromthat layer is induced. When this force becomes equal to or greater than the pressureof the overlaying burden, hanging will take place in the blast furnace. Such hanging, however, never occurs in the fluidized bed with granular particles of uniform size anddensity. The suggested mechanism has been proven in a 1/50 laboratory model of the1513 m~3 blast furnace and has been compared with the results of the actual industrialperformance of various blast furnaces. From this mechanism the authors arrived at the conclusions that the physical pro-perties of the raw materials, especially the screen analysis and the viscosity of the slagin the melting zone, are of vital importance when the driving rate of the blast furnaceis to be increased and hanging avoided.

AN EMPIRICAL RELATION BETWEEN THE DISTRIBUTION COEFFICIENT OF IMPURITIES IN BINARY ALLOYS AND THE PHASE DIAGRAM

A linear relation has been obtained between the logarithm of the distribution co-efficient of impurities logK_B and the square root of liquidus composition for componentA x_(A, L)~(1/2). in binary systems of Ge or Si with impurities. This relationship hasbeen found to be also applicable to Au-Bi, Au-Tl, Ag-Bi, Ag-Pb and Ag-Tl systems, where the second element represents the impurity. The distribution coefficients at themelting point (K_B~o) of impurities in Ge or Si obtained by extrapolating to zero concentra-tion are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values. Besides, the values K_B~oof certain impurities in Au, Ag, Cu (from group I), Mg (from group II) and Al (fromgroup III) have been calculated. It is shown that in these systems a simple correlationexists between K_B~o and the maximum molar solid solubility of impurities, just like thatfound earlier by Fischler in the binary systems of Ge or Si.

The distribution of lead and tin between liquid gallium and mercury has been studiedover a suitable concentration range at three temperatures. The distribution coefficientsobtained from the experimental data are plotted against the composition of the galliumphase, and the shape of the curves is briefly discussed. Besides, the distribution coefficient for magnesium between liquid gallium and mer-cury has been determined for a single concentration at 35℃.

BEHAVIOR OF CARBON AND OXYGEN IN FLOATING-ZONE MELTING OF PURE IRON

Abstract

Vacuum melted and cast electrolytic iron bar, 10 mm in diameter, has been refinedby the floating-zone technique for eleven passes in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Thetravel rate of the zone was 1-2 mm/min and the lower chuck was rotated at a speed of3.5-22 rpm. On the basis of the measured distribution coefficient of carbon and metallographicexamination of the non-metallic inclusions the possibility of removing carbon and oxygenfrom iron by floating-zone melting is discussed.

THE OXIDATION OF MOLYBDENUM AT INTERMEDIATE TEMPERATURES

An investigation on the oxidation of molybdenum at 350-500℃ was carried outwithin the range of 1-76 mm Hg oxygen pressure. It is shown that MoO_2 was formedfrom the very beginning directly on the molybdenum surface at all temperatures. MoO_3came to appearance later when the first-formed MoO_2 layer had attained a certain thick-ness which seems to vary with temperature and oxygen pressure. The growth of MoO_2 on molybdenum was found to obey a parabolic rate law. Itwas continued at a later stage along with the growth of MoO_3 which was confined tothe outer layer of the surface oxide. The presence of MoO_3 increased the over-all rateof oxidation somewhat, but the growth law, being parabolic, was apparently unaltered. The grain-size of MoO_3 as observed at the outer surface increased with the increasedtime of oxidation. Coarse grains of MoO_3 were prone to detachment from the oxidizedsurface, thus suggesting a kind of loosening grain-structure which may have connectionswith the departure from the parabolic towards a linear rate law of oxidation at 450℃. The rate of oxidation of molybdenum at 450℃ was found to vary with the oxygenpressure in such a way that K_P∝Po_2~(2/3). In view of this, it is suggested that theconcentration of oxygen molecules in the adsorbed surface layer may play a controllingrole upon the oxidation of molybdenum.

AN INTERNAL FRICTION PEAK RELATED TO δ-FERRITE IN A Cr-Ni-Mo-Ti HEAT-RESISTING STEEL
KUNG CHING-PING;LIU SHAO-KU Institute of Metal Research; Academia Sinica
Acta Metall Sin, 1965,

(2): 228-231.
Abstract

(358KB) (

)
The internal friction in an 18-8-3-1 Cr-Ni--Mo-Ti heat-resisting steel was measuredwith a torsion pendulum, and an internal friction peak around 520℃ was observed. Theheight of the peak was found to increase with the content of δ-ferrite in the specimens. The peak disappeared after the δ-ferrite all decomposed. This indicates that, this peakis associated with the presence of δ-ferrite in the specimen. The activation energy asso-ciated with this peak was measured to be 95,000 (±5,000) calories per mole by themethod of changing frequency. It is suggested that the internal friction peak is a bulkeffect of δ-ferrite in the specimen, and it may be induced by some diffusion process inδ-ferrite.

A STUDY OF THE RECRYSTALLIZATION OF THE HOT-ROLLED SILICON IRON SINGLE CRYSTALS

Abstract

The recrystallization of the hot-rolled silicon iron single crystals, after a reduction inthickness of 35%, was investigated. It was observed that the distortion was not uniformacross the thickness after hot-rolling. The distorion in the surface layer was larger thanin the inferior. When the samples were annealed, the recrystallization took place first inthe surface layer by the process of recrystallization in situ. Then the grains grew towardsthe interior by preferred growth of recrystallized grains in the surface layer.

THE TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENT OF SURFACE TENSION OF PURE COPPER
YEN SHUO Institute of Metal Research; Academia Sinica
Acta Metall Sin, 1965,

Abstract
PDF
(763KB) (

The change of surface tension of molten copper with temperature was measured bymeans of the sessile drop method both on heating and on cooling. It is shown that thetemperature coefficient of surface tension is negative, being -0.470 dyne/cm·℃ at1100-1500℃. A maximum was observed on the surface tension-temperature curve at1350℃, indicating an apparent positive coefficient up to this temperature. This is ex-plained by the presence of residual surface active impurities in the original sample whichlowered the surface tension, and the removal of such impurities during heating.
